Dolls were made by the seven major artisan studios of that time, which were located in the Fukoaka area. They were Urasaki, Sato, Kinkodo, Craftsman, Mimasu, Original Hakata Doll and Hakata Doll Association. Fukoaka is the site of the original Hakata dolls which were made from the mud used by skilled artisans to make the roof tiles for Lord Kuroda's new castle in the 15th Century. They were introduced to the western world at the Paris Exposition around 1900. They are ceramic figures low-fired to create a bisque finish which is then painted with water colors and sprayed with a protective coating (long gone). These two dolls were made by Sato around 1951-53. The men should be holding a wooden walking staff, which is in the box. This particular doll was made by all seven studios and is slightly rare to find.
