Rare WOOD & HUGHES Antique FLORAL REPOUSSE STERLING SILVER CREAMER & SUGAR SET 1800’sMaker’s Marks: W3H STERLING 297 C, (Wood & Hughes).
Circa: 1845-1899/1903. New York, N.Y.
Description: An extremely rare antique set from Wood & Hughes! Pieces are in very nice condition considering how old they are! The inside cavities have a light gold gilt finish, the outsides are just silver, but do look a little gold in some of my photos. I see no denting to the lovely detailed floral repousse bodies! Inside the sugar bowl rim is a very minor dent, and the bottoms of both show some bent areas or wear from surface contact, but both will sit soundly on the table. The inside of the creamer is slightly more tarnished than the sugar bowl. In my photos it appears much darker than it actually is. I’ve chosen not to polish this lovely set, but would be happy to do so if desired, please just ask when paying.
Weight: 179.8 grams Sterling silver.
Measurements: Creamer is 2 ⅞” tall to top of spout, and 3 3 ¼” in diameter not including the handle. Sugar bowl is 2 ⅝” tall, and 4” in diameter not including the handles.
History: From 1833 to 1845 the Company was called Gale, Wood, & Hughes. In 1845 it became Wood & Hughes. In 1899 the plant ceased manufacturing and was sold to Graft, Washbourne & Dunn. Wood & Hughes continued selling their stock until they closed their doors in 1903. In 1961 it was acquired by Gorham. For a time Wood & Hughes was the largest manufacturers’ of silverware in the country.
