    Description

    Hayden & Whilden Southern Repousse Lidded Pitcher Sterling 1855 Charleston
    Antique ornate footed sterling silver cream pitcher with a hinged, domed lid and a Naturalistic handle. The body is decorated with Repousse floral and foliate patterns, the top edge is fluted and accented with engraved chased leaves. On the right side, there is a reserve among the patterns, monogrammed "JSN". Under the fancy covered spout there is a Repousse North Wind mask. The handle features a hollow lobed stem with applied foliate elements. The fluted, domed, layered lid is crowned with a lobed finial. Made of English standard sterling silver by Charles Grosjean & Eli Woodward (major suppliers to the early Tiffany & Co.), New York City, NY c. 1852-1862. Marked 3. Retailed by Hayden & Whilden, Charleston, SC c. 1855-1863.
    This outstanding, majestic creamer is 4 1/2" in diameter (at the widest), 2 5/8" top diameter, 3 3/8" bottom diameter, 5 3/4" from spout to handle, 5 1/2" tall (without the finial) and weighs a substantial 495.3 grams or 15.97 ozs Troy.
    The soft, warm, original finish is present, with no buffing or machine polishing.
    The excellent original condition and clear, crisp detail, with no removals, repairs or alterations, make this an especially attractive offering.
